Chess is a beautiful game which helps in critical and logical thinking. The students who learn chess develop spatial skills and have shown marked increase in IQ, memory, concentration and problem solving skills. This class will introduce them to the game of chess and help them learn the basic level game. Apart from introducing the chess board, the moves of the chess pieces, the lessons will focus on: 1. Opening principles and introduction to all the book openings. 2. Capturing pieces, 3. Defending, 4. Giving a check and getting out of check, 5. Forcing moves and 6. Reading the board. Practice on the rules of castling, creating mate in one move , taking a piece which is attacked twice, understanding favorable exchange would also be focused on. Students will learn strategies on Draw, Mate and Stalemate and will be able to use the Winning Tactics. Lessons will be included to help students understand the notations as well. Teaching will be done through digital chess games.
This will be followed by students playing live games with instructor supervision and coaching to practice what they have learned in a game situation. Please note that we will not be using any physical chess boards in this class. All lessons and games will be played online through the chess.com website, so there are some technical aspects to the class, including creating a chess.com account that will require preparation from your end.
